Clorox Strategic Facility Planning   | Oakland+pleasanton, CA

Clorox - a household name in the consumer goods sector - has a headquarters in a downtown Oakland high-rise and a research facility in a set of low-rise buildings in suburban Pleasanton.

In Oakland, the company's needs and staffing numbers had evolved over time, and it was looking to make more efficient use of its space. A study was conducted which examined utilization, space allocations, and the way various business lines worked together. Recommendations were made to renovate each floor according to a "universal plan" which reflected modern space standards and was easily interchangeable as needs change over time. Additional recommendations addressed reorganizing staff and "restacking" the building to better reflect functional adjacencies. By undertaking these changes, the company was able to consolidate staff into fewer floors, allowing lease of the rest to external parties, which generated revenue which helped offset the cost of the improvements.

In Pleasanton, the technical research facility consisted of both labs and office space which were suffering from poor layout and dated infrastructure. Recommendations were made for renovations that would address these issues and create room for growth.

Together, the recommendations for both locations would ultimately lead to the move-migration of various groups in a phased construction process of over $50 million in improvements.
